Invitation Wording & Etiquette

Wedding invitation wording can be a tricky business, but hopefully the examples here will help you decide on how you would like your guests to be invited! If none of the examples fit your situation and you would like some assistance then please don’t hesitate to get in touch in the usual ways.

Useful Information

The information below provides some guidance on traditional wedding invitation wording and etiquette. However, don’t forget that this is your day so don’t feel obliged to follow the rules just because they are there!

The Invitation Line

Traditionally, if you are having a religious ceremony it is standard practise to use “The honour of your presence” as the invitation line on your wedding invitations. Alternatively, for civil ceremonies, the wording “The pleasure of your company” is used.

Bride & Groom Names

Wedding invitation etiquette suggests that the name of the bride generally precedes the groom’s name. Also, if the couple are hosting the wedding by themselves, including their titles are optional.

Historically, invitations issued by the bride’s parents should refer to her by her first and middle names and the groom by his full name and title.

How to Write Dates & Times

For formal events, dates and times should be written in full eg “Second of August Two Thousand and Fifteen at One O’Clock”. However for a more casual wedding, writing the date in numerals is perfectly acceptable. The year is optional (the assumption being your wedding is on the nearest such date) but at Enchanting we like to include this just as your invitation would seem naked without it! 🙂

Conventionally the time is spelled out using “o’clock” or “half after ___ o’clock” (although I have never used the latter). The use of a.m. or p.m. is fine for less formal affairs.

How to Include the Venue Address

When writing the ceremony and/or reception address, it is customary to just us the venue name and the town and county in which it is based; the street address is not usually needed unless omitting it would lead to confusion. It is also worth noting that the post code is not essential to include, and often an invitation actually looks better without this.
